How fast does the average person speak?

Conversational English runs at roughly 120 to 180 words per minute, with most speakers near 150 wpm. Rates differ by language, but a 2019 study of 17 languages found that fast-spoken languages such as Spanish and Japanese pack less information into each syllable, so all of them convey about 39 bits per second. Auctioneers and some podcasters exceed 200 wpm.
