What is the average typing speed?

In an online study of 168,000 people, the average typing speed was about 52 words per minute; typical office workers fall in the 40 to 60 wpm range. The fastest participants used 'rollover' typing, pressing the next key before releasing the last. The Guinness-recognised record is 216 wpm, set by Stella Pajunas on an IBM electric typewriter in 1946.
