About this test

Type the passage; the module times you and reports words per minute. It compares to Dhakal et al. (2018), a CHI paper covering 136 million keystrokes from 168,000 volunteers in an online test. The module uses a normal approximation with mean 52 WPM and SD 18; the real distribution is skewed to the right.

Most people cluster between 35 and 70. 70 WPM is faster than about 84% of test takers, 90 WPM about 98%. Professional typists work at 80 and above, and the world record is 212 WPM. Conversational speech runs around 130 WPM, so nearly nobody types as fast as they talk.

What is a good typing speed?

Above 52 WPM beats the average volunteer in Dhakal et al. (2018). 65 WPM is about the 76th percentile, 80 WPM about the 94th. Office jobs that list a requirement usually ask for 40 to 60.

What is the average typing speed?

52 words per minute, SD 18, in the module's approximation of Dhakal et al. (2018), n=168,000. Self-selected online test takers are probably a bit faster than the general population, so the true average is likely lower.

How fast is 100 WPM?

Faster than about 99.6% of people (z = 2.67 on mean 52, SD 18). Court reporters on a stenotype reach 225, but that is a different instrument. On a normal keyboard, 100 WPM sustained with high accuracy is rare.

Percentiles above come from the same parameters the Typing Speed module uses. See the methodology for how they are calculated.
