How many atoms are in a grain of sand?
A single grain of sand contains around 10¹⁹ atoms, more than the number of grains on a large beach.
Source: Molar mass of quartz; 1 mm grain.
Context
Around 10¹⁹ for a 1 mm grain of quartz, from its mass and the molar mass of silicon dioxide. That is more atoms in one grain than there are grains on a large beach.
The same scale works in both directions: a beach of grains, a grain of atoms. Avogadro's number is what makes the small end so crowded.
