What percentage of people have blue eyes?

Roughly 8 to 10% of people worldwide have blue eyes. There is no global census of eye colour, so this is an estimate stitched together from regional surveys. Blue eyes are concentrated in Northern and Eastern Europe, where surveys put Estonia and Finland near 90%. Eye colour is not a simple recessive trait: a 2021 genome study found 61 genomic regions involved. Most blue-eyed people do share one variant near the OCA2 gene, estimated to have arisen 6,000 to 10,000 years ago.
