Are there more stars than grains of sand on Earth?

There are more stars in the observable universe (about 10²² to 10²⁴) than grains of sand on all of Earth's beaches (about 10¹⁸).

Source: Order-of-magnitude estimates; University of Hawaii (2003).

Context

By the usual order-of-magnitude estimates, yes. The observable universe holds about 10²² to 10²⁴ stars. All of Earth's beaches hold about 10¹⁸ grains of sand.

Both numbers are rough; the University of Hawaii estimate from 2003 is the one most often quoted for the sand. The gap is at least ten thousand to one, which survives any reasonable error in either count.
