History
Can you see the Great Wall of China from space?
The Great Wall of China cannot be seen from space with the naked eye. It is only 5 to 8 metres wide and roughly the colour of the land around it.
Source: NASA (2005); Yang Liwei (2003).
Context
Not with the naked eye. The wall is only 5 to 8 metres wide and is built from local materials, so it is roughly the colour of the land around it.
Yang Liwei, China's first astronaut, said in 2003 that he could not see it. NASA has said the same: it can be picked out in some photographs with zoom lenses and the right light, but not by an unaided eye in orbit.
